30 SECONDS TO MARS: SURREAL EXPERIENCE

newsonline escreveu sobre o espetaculo de ontem em Joanesburgo

With an intro of beating drums, billowing smoke and strobe lighting Jared Leto (lead vocalist) joined his brother Shannon on stage together with Tomo Milicevic (guitar) with the opening song ‘It’s a Beautiful Lie’ from their début album (2005). It must be stated at this point that if anyone was unsure about the relationship between the band members and the planet in their name, one wouldn’t be after experiencing the surreal, almost illusionary appearance of the trio.

Such was the effect that they seemed to be silhouettes (as evidenced by the photographs), with seemingly Martian-like qualities. Well into the concert, however, the smoke dissipated and the band members proved that they really, truly were no illusion, but on stage in South Africa (and Johannesburg in particular) performing before thousands of adoring fans.

This was a concert like no other, in that Jared encouraged audience participation to the extent of creating a mosh pit in the Golden Circle area as well as suggesting that girlfriends be lifted onto their partners’ shoulders. This wasn’t all however, as he continually chatted to the crowd asking them to jump to the songs, lift their hands and generally expend their energy in a manner which would remain as an indelible memory. 30 Seconds to Mars fed off the audience as much as the songs were lapped up. Jared even encouraged suggestions from the crowd.

Despite having just jetted into the country due to the production of their short film ‘Hurricane’ (of which there is a taster onhttp://thirtysecondstomars.thisisthehive.net/blog/ ) there was a vibe and an energy which permeated the Coca-Cola Dome as well as the band, so much so that there wasn’t one, but three encores at the conclusion of the concert.

With songs such as ‘Attack’, ‘This is War’, ‘Hurricane’, ‘Kings and Queens’ and ‘The Fantasy’ among others, this is a tour of note and Cape Town is the next on the ‘this is War’ tour agenda at the Grand Arena, Grandwest Casino and Entertainment World tomorrow (Sunday 21 November 2010).

Watch out!
